[ARCHIVED] Winter Weather: What to do if You Think You Have a Frozen Pipe

Newsflash_FrozenPipeInfo

If you suspect you have a frozen pipe, you can locate the frozen section by feeling for the coldest area on the pipe or look for a section that has frost on the exterior. If a pipe is frozen, it is safest to call a plumber to handle the problem. The pipe may crack and could burst when thawed. If you decide to thaw the pipe yourself, apply heat slowly with a hairdryer set on low, the exhaust from a vacuum cleaner, or heat tape. Never use an open flame. Keep the heat moving in the general area where the pipe is frozen, but never concentrate heat on one spot. Keep faucets open while warming the pipe, to allow water to flow and relieve pressure as it melts.

Sometimes, the meter is the most exposed equipment and can freeze, especially if the meter box lid is not properly in place. If you strongly suspect a frozen meter, call the office at 817-760-5200. If the call is after business hours, please call our after-hours emergency number at 817-760-5255.

Make sure everyone in the home knows where the water shutoff valve is located in case of an emergency such as a burst pipe. For our customers, the property owner’s shutoff valve is located on your side of the water meter at the meter box.
